Program Description:


Join Dr. Karen Rice and the School of Social Work on an alternative winter break service learning experience to Cape Town, South Africa. Operating since 2013, this program presents an opportunity for cultural immersion, service learning, and development of skills that fosters both personal and professional growth. Participants will explore historical, social, and political factors that have shaped South Africa with the goals of enhancing knowledge relating to social justice and human rights, fostering global citizenship, and expanding world views. Attendees will also participate in service learning at various NGOs whose mission is to advance social justice and human rights. 


Academic Details

This program is a service learning experience and is not offered for academic credit, however, students interested in participating in this program for credit, should contact Dr. Karen Rice at (717)871-5297 or to discuss their options.

The anticipated cost for this program is approximately $3,500

This cost does not include:
  • International Student Identity Card (ISIC): depending on insurance plan selected
  • Transportation to/from US airport
  • *Passport (How to Apply for a Passport)
  • Personal expenses (souvenirs and other daily expenses)
  • Incidentals
  • Some meals

*If you do not have a passport, you must apply for one IMMEDIATELY. Keep in mind that it takes 4 - 6 weeks to receive a passport.

Housing is arranged by VACorps, the program provider.

Cape Town
All participants will stay together in a house.  Depending on size of the trip, participants will either have single or shared rooms.

Participants will be staying at a backpackers that was vetted by VACorps in shared rooms. 


  • Successful completion of all paperwork for Dr. Karen Rice and Global Education
  • Millersville University approval is contingent upon Global Education application
